The Province newspaper won a Jack Webster Award — B.C.’s prestigious provincial journalism awards — in November 2012 for a series on the implications of the coming ‘grey wave.’ The series, called Boomerangst, investigated the impact of a flood of new Alzheimer’s cases, the pressure on our health care system, particularly home care and long-term care, the costs to adult caregivers, and the housing, transit and infrastructure changes that will be required to meet the needs of our aging population. It was a fascinating series to work on, particularly the heartbreaking stories of people affected by dementia and their caregivers, and I’m proud our team was recognized.
