Ever wonder what motivates someone to turn a travel experience into a life-changing experience? My piece, “Family Vocation,” published in Reader’s Digest Canada‘s December 2012 edition, follows families who come home with more than memories form vacations in developing countries — they come home motivated to work to eradicate poverty they have witnessed. The piece explores the genesis of the Peru-focused and Toronto-based charity the Alma Foundation. It began as a fleeting thought about inequality as founder Alan Harman was watching porters in flip-flops lug his fancy hiking gear on the Machu Picchu. Today, the charity seeds 100,000 through a dozen project in the region designed to improve children’s education. Want more? Pick up a copy or download a digital edition.
